Context
Note:
I initially thought that I was going to be the technical director for a cabaret show so I wrote my initial proposal according to that. However, after I had already written the proposal I was assigned as technical director for the second year actors so I will be doing my research and preparation for them instead.

Initial Proposal
At the start of the course, I
was interested in lighting and from Unit 1 through to Unit 11, that interest
has developed. This is because the world of lighting fascinates me in what it
allows you to do with the technology that is available to you. In the
long-term, I would like to have a career in lighting. In the short-term, I’d
like to get into drama school in order to get a degree and amass even more
knowledge. Since the start of the course, I have learned a great deal in
lighting shows; from coiling a cable to programming and running lighting cues
which means that I’ve come a long way as I knew very little when I first came
to college. During Unit 8, after learning how to work in a team, I learned how
to lead a team by being the technical director for a production which gave me a
boost in confidence.
I intend to be the technical director for a cabaret-themed show. My ultimate goal is to accurately
recreate the lights of a cabaret night during the 1900s. In order to get an
idea of how to light the performance, I will independently research the history
of cabaret, what it is and where cabarets took place. I will also look at the
way cabarets were lit and the lighting technology that was used at the time. I
anticipate creating a performance where the audience is fully immersed in an
experience where they feel like they are in the 1900s. To get to my ultimate goal,
I will attend production meetings to discuss what the performers would like to
have in terms of tech. Although I will primarily ask them for any lighting
ideas that they wish to have in their individual performances, I will also ask
the performers for anything else that they would like which may help me carry
out my role to a better standard, such as backing tracks, props, set and
costumes. I shall watch the rehearsals that the cast have to get an idea of
their movements during the various songs and dances that they plan to perform.
During the
process, I will use a ‘green book’ to record things like tech requirements,
notes from production meetings, equipment that we need, decisions that have
been made and changes that we may need to make. Throughout the process, I shall
evaluate how I am working and how close we are to reaching our goal in
comparison to the time in which we have to complete the technical preparation. I
plan to use these evaluations to improve the way I work and change any of the
technical elements if necessary. At the end of the process, I shall reflect on
what went well and what could have been improved and why. I will also look at
how I did as a team member and individual to see if and how I could improve so
that I can adjust my way of working in the future.
In order to help me write my proposal to a better standard, I was given a few sheets which gave me some guidelines as to what I should include. The form below is the official proposal form that I used to make sure to make that the content that I was writing met the criteria that my assessors were grading me on.

These are questions that I was given in order to give me further help in writing my proposal. |
Initial Research
These are some of the links that I was initially given to use to research cabaret. However, I will not use them as they are not relevant to my Unit 12 since I will be working with the acting show. I was given these links to research by the Dance & Musical Theatre teacher in order for me to have something to get started.
The actors have split up into different groups and they are all doing different pieces of their choice. Some of the groups are doing one person shows and others are in groups of 2-4. The plays that they are doing are as follows:
- Girls & Boys
- Zoo Story
- Bronx Tale
- Waiting For Godot
- Misty
- Girls
