Research

After attending a production meeting with each group, I have noted that I will only need to worry about the sound and lighting cues. They are going to take care of their own costumes, set and props. I am able to use a lighting desk to a decent level so I will do some research about some fairly advanced level things about the console such as how to record an effect.

On the other hand, I have never been responsible for the sound so I will need to do some research about the basic use of Q-Lab, such as how to edit the cues, how to trim them in length, how to add a pre/post wait and how to add an auto-continue and auto-follow.

I am going to have to use Q-Lab to edit and run a number of sound cues. I have never used Q-Lab so I am not very proficient with the software so, in order to get an idea of how to use Q-Lab, I will be looking at the link below. It's a beginner's user manual provided by Figure 53 who are the creators of Q-Lab.

https://figure53.com/docs/qlab/v3/general/getting-started/

I also watched the video below as a way to get a better idea of the basics of Q-Lab.

How to use QLab (Quick Tutorial)

Both links helped me to learn how to put sound and video cues onto Q-Lab and trim the length of sound cues.

As I do not how to put lighting cues onto Q-Lab, I am researching into how that can be done. So far, I have found the following links which are guides to using lights in Q-Lab. They will help me to use Q-Lab extensively and to develop my practical skills.

The first link is about how Q-Lab communicates with the lights.

https://figure53.com/docs/qlab/v4/lighting/introduction-to-lighting/

The second link talks about the command lines of the lights

https://figure53.com/docs/qlab/v4/lighting/light-cues/

The third link mentions the Light Dashboard on Q-Lab and what it does.

https://figure53.com/docs/qlab/v4/lighting/light-dashboard/

The following link teaches you about the Lighting Command Language that you use to control your lighting instruments.

https://figure53.com/docs/qlab/v4/lighting/lighting-command-language/

This link talks about how to patch the lights in Q-Lab

https://figure53.com/docs/qlab/v4/lighting/lighting-patch-editor/

The final link that I looked at for using the lights through Q-Lab talked about the Light Library.

I also had a look at the following videos as they helped me to get a better idea of how to use lights in Q-Lab.

I did not go through with the idea of running the lights from Q-Lab because it would take too much time to sort out and I didn’t have the time to organise it.

The cast of 'Waiting For Godot' would like to have a cue that starts from an orangey lighting state, in order to suggest that it is the evening, which gradually goes into a blue lighting state to suggest that it has become night-time. My initial thoughts were to do this using a tracking cue and as I am not sure as to how a tracking cue is programmed, I had to look it up.

The actors who are performing 'Zoo Story' would like to have a park bench for their performance. I went about looking for a park bench to hire and I found the following links. However, I decided not to get any of them as they were either outside the college budget or not were the actors wanted. We managed to find an appropriate bench for the piece in the college garden. However, it belongs to the LDD department so we have to ask them if we can borrow a bench for the performance.

There are a couple of pieces for which I need to create a step-based effect in order to simulate the flashing lights of a police car. I do not know how to create the desired effect on the lighting desk so I watched the following video in order to acquire the necessary knowledge to do so.
